We'd be safer if we put fewer people in prison. Perhaps it is impossible to eliminate prisons, but we could make them smaller.

Arab journalists in US assassination target list

Two Arab journalists are suing to be removed from the official United States assassination target list.

They say that they were included in the list by an algorithm. In effect, by a killer robot. Here's more info.

What this shows is that an "unbiased" algorithm does not necessarily imply it is doing the right thing.

ISP privacy rules

Some states are working on laws to replace the incomplete ISP privacy rules that the Republicans just got rid of.

The Minnesota bill will change little; ISPs will simply arrange for nearly all users to "consent". To institute real respect for privacy at this level of internet use, one has to go further. For instance, to forbid ISPs to make note of, or tell anyone, anything about a user's internet traffic, except under the authority of a specific court order.
