Approving new coal mines

jeudi 7 octobre 2021 à 02:00

Australia keeps on approving new coal mines, arguing that they won't cause climate damage because people would otherwise get coal from some other mine.

This reasoning is willful blindness. We know that the owners of the new mine, once it is built, will demand policies to encourage people to buy and burn more coal — because that's what fossil fuel companies generally do.

USPS banking

When the IMF lends to poor countries, it imposes fees that make borrowing quite expensive.

Coral lost

*14% of world’s coral lost in less than a decade, study shows.*

The article does not mention that ocean acidification will kill all coral when it reaches a certain point. However, if we curb CO2 emissions, that will limit the acidification as well as limit global heating.

Those two changes in the ocean are not quite equivalent, however, because there are other greenhouse gases that contribute to global heating, and they do not contribute to ocean acidification.

Cops circulating sexist insults

The head of the London thug department, and the minister in charge of policing, both received and ignored notice of cops circulating sexist insults.

It should not be a crime to say such things, but when cops do it, that implies they are not fit for the job. A police officer's duty is to protect the public; an officer who harbors a prejudice against some demographic group cannot be expected to do it. What's more, conversation that derides that duty will discourage them from doing it.
