It's fatuous to ask whether massive surveillance "works" for some purpose (even preventing real terrorism), because it oppresses people's ability to think.

(As well as democracy.)

Textbook rental

A publisher tried to force law students to rent a textbook for a year and then surrender it.

For the moment, the publisher has backed down, but we need to organize to stop publishers from distributing ebooks this way. The right of first sale should be extended to ebooks.
