The words of the founders make it clear that the purpose of the Second Amendment was to allow slave states to keep the militias that they used for suppressing slave revolts.
Now that we don't allow slavery, that purpose is irrelevant. If the Second Amendment were interpreted as limited to state-regulated militias, it would become basically harmless.
