Pieper Lewis killed a man that she accused of raping her. She has been
sentenced to 5 years' probation, with the requirement to
pay $150k to
the man's family.
She can't possibly make that much money, because nearly good jobs are
off limits to people with criminal convictions. So this would be an
impossible demand, and that cannot be just. By luck, she raised
the money by asking for donations, but that doesn't excuse an impossible
demand in a sentence.
In California, Jay Jordan has won a campaign to change that policy
of
excluding convicts from good jobs.
