I suppose he had been tortured already and expected more torture, so he attempted to escape a fate worse than death.

You may call me hyperstrict, but I think there should be limits on manipulative treatment of adults, too. Adults are not immune to being pressured into false confessions. I agree that an adult ought be strong enough to resist the pressure to lie, but that doesn't imply that adults who are not strong enough to resist deserve a false conviction.
