Jonas Öberg joins FSFE as Executive Director

FSFE has recruited long-time Free Software activist Jonas Öberg to be the organisation's Executive Director. He joins the organisation's leadership team on March 1.

Jonas Öberg is one of FSFE's founding members, and was the organisation's vice president from 2001 through 2008. He has considerable experience in managing Free Software-related projects and organisations. Before joining as the organisation's Executive Director, he has been a Shuttleworth Foundation Fellow working on the Elog.io project to create a global provenance repository for creative works, worked as Creative Commons' regional coordinator in Europe, lectured in Software Engineering and built up the conference FSCONS in its original form.

Jonas first started volunteering for Free Software in 1998, while studying mathematics at a university level. Finding the classes in computer science much more interesting than mathematics, he soon found Free Software and began volunteering for the Free Software Foundation as chief webmaster for the GNU Project. Through the years, he's also participated in Debian, the GNOME project, and authored the occasional software himself.

"We're absolutely delighted to have Jonas on board," says Karsten Gerloff, FSFE's president. "FSFE's volunteers and staff are enourmously dedicated and motivated. Jonas will channel this energy into an even greater capacity for action. Thanks to him, we will be able to achieve so much more for Free Software."

"Those are challenges that I very much look forward to tackling together with our staff, Fellows and volunteers across Europe and elsewhere, as well as in collaboration with other organisations."

Appel à manifestations: Faites partie de la journée de libération des documents 2015

La journée de libération des documents (#DFD2015; NDT : Document Freedom Day) est une campgane mondiale pour la libération des formats, qui aura lieu le 25 mars 2015, avec des événements locaux à travers le monde. Prenez part à cette célébration mondiale des standards ouverts et inscrivez votre événements DFD pour 2015!

Chaque année depuis 2008, les gens qui se soucient d'une société de la libre information célèbrent la Document Freedom Day afin de sensibiliser aux standards ouverts. En cette journée, des militants du monde entier se réunissent pour parler de l'accès aux communications, organiser des activités publiques locales, et généralement passer le mot à propos des standards ouverts de nombreuses façons. Prenez part au mouvement et inscrivez aujourd'hui votre équipe DFD!

Comment s'impliquer

"Chaque année, le plus gros de cette campagne est fait par des gens comme vous qui organisent événements locaux à travers le monde. Pour ça, nous avons rendu plus facile que jamais d'organiser un événement" annonce Erik Albers, chef de l'équipe internationale Document Freedom Day team. "Nous offrons du matériel de promotion dans de nombreuses langues et des illustrations que vous pouvez remixer, partager et améliorer pour faire connaître votre propre événement."

Pour coordonner la campagne de cette année, l'équipe de la FSFE a aussi produit un nouveau site web, facilitant la mise en contact avec d'autres personnes participant à la journée autour du monde mais aussi avec le personnel de la campagne.

FSFE responds to EU consultation on patents and standard

In order to push for a more enlightened policy approach to managing innovation and knowledge, FSFE has submitted a response [pdf] to an EU consultation on patents and standards. This is the latest action in FSFE's ongoing work in promoting Open Standards.

The consultation, run by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, sought input from the public on the interaction of standards and patents. In its response, FSFE focused mainly on how patents on computer-implemented inventions negatively affect competition and innovation in the software market.

We also highlighted that so-called "fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory" (FRAND) licensing terms are in practice a grave discrimination against Free Software programs. In many segments of the software market, these programs are the most significant competition to non-free offerings. FSFE recommends that standards organisations instead implement the successful patent licensing policies of the W3C and other bodies, and make the restriction-free licensing of standard-essential patents mandatory.

Position paper for the boost of Open Educational Resources on the basis of Free Software

Together with FSFE and other partners, the Bündnis Freie Bildung ("Free Education Alliance") today publishes its position paper about the creation and usage of Open Educational Resources (OER). Therein, the Bündnis demands a consequent publishing of all OER-material under public licences and their availability as Free Software and in Open Standard formats.

The Bündnis Freie Bildung is following a vision to have "all educational resources usable without any legal or technical barriers". This can only be achieved by using Free Software and Open Standards. Consequently, we find it as a core postulation of the alliance's initial position paper "Der Weg zur Stärkung freier Bildungsmaterialien" ("The road to boost Open Educational Resources" only available in German). The paper has a specific focus on the creation and usage of OER inside the German educational system.

"In the upcoming years, Open Educational Resources will receive an ever growing importance inside all sectors of public and private education", says Erik Albers from the FSFE. "To bring OER to their full potential, Free Software is indispensable. We are happy to join the Bündnis Freie Bildung today to bring an understanding of this context into politics and society."

Furthermore, the position paper demands to consider the use of Free Software already during the development or extension of IT infrastructures. In addition, it shall be mandatory to publish educational resources that have been paid with public money as Open Educational Resources. By this, the Bündnis Freie Bildung expects a higher fairness in education and the promotion of participative structures inside the educational system. Both are characteristics, that experience an ever growing importance with the ongoing digitalisation of learning and teaching.

"The more we see classic educational environments equipped with computers, the more important it is to offer every learner an education that is independent from manufacturers and products, that is participative and is built on top of free educational material. For the FSFE, this begins with Free Software and achieves perfection in interaction with OER", says Erik Albers.

The Bündnis Freie Bildung is a coalition of organisations and individuals with the aim to pin the usage and support of Open Education Resources into politics and society. The alliance was founded by Creative Commons Germany, Open Knowledge Foundation Germany and Wikimedia Germany. The FSFE affiliates with the Bündnis as a partner. Inside the alliance, the FSFE raises awareness about free technology - namely Free Software and Open Standards - as a necessary condition for a sustainable development of Open Educational Resources.

Montrez votre amour du Logiciel Libre

Le 14 février de chaque année, la Free Software Foundation Europe demande aux utilisateurs de Logiciel Libre de penser à ceux qui travaillent dur dans la communauté du Logiciel Libre et de leur montrer individuellement que cela est apprécié en cette journée "J'aime le Logiciel Libre".

Comme l'année dernière, la campagne est dédiée aux personnes derrières le Logiciel Libre parce qu'elles nous permettent d'utiliser, d'étudier, de partager et d'améliorer le logiciel qui nous permet de travailler en toute liberté. Cette fois, nous porterons plus spécialement notre attention sur les petites contributions à la grande image qu'est la communauté du Logiciel Libre.

"Quand les gens pensent aux logiciels libres qu'ils aiment et admirent, beaucoup pensent aux grosses applications très connues. Ces logiciels et les organisations qui sont derrières sont effectivement très importantes. Mais nous devrions aussi penser aux innombrables développeurs qui passent leur temps libre ou leur temps de travail à écrire et améliorer les plus petits morceaux de logiciels sur lesquels nous nous reposons aussi." dit Max Mehl, le responsable de la campagne #ilovefs de cette année. "Les codeurs ne sont pas des machines et leurs contributions méritent notre respect et notre gratitude."

Pour la journée J'aime le Logiciel Libre 2015, la FSFE a différentes propositions sur comment montrer votre amour aux personnes derrière le Logiciel Libre, par exemple :

En images Une image vaut mille mots. La Free Software Foundation Europe a déjà rassemblé quelques images de personnes montrant comment ils expriment publiquement leur soutien aux contributeurs. C'est une façon très personnelle de participer. En cartes postales Si vous préférez plutôt représenter vos pensées par des mots, les toutes nouvelles cartes postales vous permettent de le faire. Cela convient aussi bien à votre valentin(e) qu'aux contributeurs du logiciel que vous adorez. Les cartes postales peuvent être commandées gratuitement comme les autres objets promotionnels de la FSFE. #ilovefs a toujours eu un grand impact en ligne, la FSFE espère voir encore une fois de nombreux messages dans toutes les langues sur les réseaux de micro-blogging, les réseaux sociaux, les listes de diffusions et les blogs. En donnant Donner aux développeurs et aux organisations dédiées au Logiciel Libre est une autre manière de montrer votre gratitude. Invitez-les à boire un verre ou faites un don à leurs projets,à la FSFE ou à d'autres soutiens du Logiciel Libre.
