To successfully resist patriarchal oppression, feminists must re-imagine gender-binary-based social structures – think beyond the binary – in ways that redress current inequities; as McClain points out, recognizing those inequities requires us to continue to use binary “categories of sex” to distinguish between women’s lives and men’s lives, and thus register the effects of sexism and misogyny.
