Danger of unregulated US chemical plants
mercredi 16 octobre 2013 à 14:00Unregulated US chemical plants keep exploding, sometimes killing bystanders. There are 500 plants in which one accident could threaten 100,000 people.
This dwarfs the danger of terrorism. So why does the US spend so much on the Committee for Public Safety (better known as the Department of Homeland Security), and hardly anything on inspecting and regulating chemical plants? I suspect a few reasons:
- It is more political useful to make people hyper-afraid of certain minority groups than hyper-afraid of factories.
- Spending on "security" is profitable for companies while regulating their plants is inconvenient for them.
